Royal Engineers UOTC Competition
We arrived for the weekend on the friday night with the competition set to begin on the Saturday morning. After a rude awakening by a fire alarm practice in the small hours we began the competition.
Our first stand on the saturday was the practice Medium Girder Bridge build which we did well in dispite the majority of the team never having seen it before. We went onto the watermanship stand to practice our boat handling skills, both of these stands were designed help prepare the teams for the competition stands on the Sunday. Before lunch on th first day we did the endurance race, which was a 2 mile run with a six man log with extra burdens thrown in along the route. This was the first comptetition stand that counted and very disappointingly we came second overall by 20 seconds, worse still we were beaten by another DTUS unit. After lunch we took part in a brief demolitions insight with the instructors giving us a look at EMOE (Explosive Method of Entry). The last stand of the day was the command task which was another competitoin stand, we came sixth overall.
On the Saturday night our hosts 3 RSME threw the annual fancy dress social for the officer cadets, the theme this year was superheroes. All the members of the team were prepared for this and it was a good night overall.
On the Sunday our first stand was the survival stand that is run annually by the Royal Gurkha Engineers, this is always a favourite as there is always some curry going. After this we spent the next couple of stands at the static display, this is when the corps shows the wide range of specialities it has to offer and gives officer cadets the time to talk to members of different engineering regiments. The Medium Girder Bridge competition was next and we managed to come eighth overall.on The final competition was the assault boat race, we started at a disadvantage being effectively in last place, but we were able to battle back and come a respectful seventh.
In the competition Typhoon Squadron came 5th overall and were the top DTUS team in the competition, as well as this being the best position that typhoon squadron has finished before. Unfortunately we were unable to come away with a trophy this year, but I am sure that next years team will put this to rights. I think that the competition was a success with all the team putting a top effort in all the events.
